Editor’s Letter:

For several months, BWP listed a submission category for authors that would be interested in a participating in a collaborative Kickstarter campaign. The press would do the Kickstarter for extra marketing funds, but still cover the basic publishing costs from the standard publishing budget. No one was interested.

The error may have been in the presentation. In other words, authors may have been more receptive to the idea after the publishing was arranged rather than at the submission stage. It is also important to note that there would be nothing stopping any independent press from using Kickstarter or indiegogo to fund marketing efforts with or without an authors cooperation after the rights are contracted.  So why did we list this as a submission category?

The hope was that if we found an author that was interested in this kind of marketing that it would be a good start for a collaborative effort.  As everyone knows, small independent presses need all the help they can get.

Now, this article from Publisher’s Weekly has made me rethink. Although we won’t be publishing comic books anytime soon, perhaps we will do a campaign for the whole upcoming list.

Also, I just wanted to add that the NY Public Library has this great page about books for children on famous and awesome women.  I just love it.
